To consider as I prepare for Christmas…..
It was Justin’s day to get up with Josh. I did it anyway. A gift to him.
Josh didn’t have to be at school as early. Justin didn’t get to sleep in, but I still did breakfast, lunch, the mundane.
I smiled at my service.
That night he asked who’s turn it was to get up with Josh the next day.
“Yours,” I said, my voice rising. “I did it this morning.”
He raised an eyebrow. “You got to sleep in. You got him out the door while I got ready for work. We both got up at the same time.”
To me the gift was time. Time to exercise. Time to pray. Time to not cook.
For Justin the gift had been to sleep.
My gift to him was lost in translation
gift giving becomes a holier practice.
A chance to see life from another’s eyes. To understand it from someone else’s perspective. To know and understand our fellow humans.
